What is your prior experience with this story, the book, and/or its author. Maybe you haven't read about it but you heard about all of the controversy in the fall of 2010 about censoring a version of the text for younger readers. Perhaps you have seen a movie or cartoon based on the story and you have a loose idea of what the story is about.

THERE IS NO READING REQUIRED FOR THIS POST!!
I have heard of Huckleberry Finn from movies, people, and books. From what I've heard about it, this book is about a white boy who runs off with black man. When I read Tom Sawyer in middle school, I believe I remember Huck being Tom Sawyer's best friend. This book is mentioned in the movie Easy A when the main character is making references to books and movies. I've also heard that there has been controversy over whether or not this book should be a summer reading book or not because the text might be too vulgar for a younger age group.
ReplyDeleteI have always known Huckleberry Finn to be the boy who tagged along with Tom Sawyer. I always envisioned him wearing rolled up jeans and a loose plaid shirt, holding a fishing rod in his hand and wearing a straw hat on his head. In 8th grade, when I read Tom Sawyer, I had heard of it from my parents, when they told me they had also read the interesting story by Mark Twain.I have never really heard of the controversy, but I can imagine it has something to do with the fact that the grammar is very poor, and it almost makes the text more difficult to read. I have never given much attention to the Huck Finn references in anything, although I am sure they were always there, I just never really noticed them. After reading Tom Sawyer in middle school, I can only imagine what is in store for me reading Huckleberry Finn three years later.
ReplyDeleteI have never read Tom Sawyer, but in 8th grade I read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I remember very little of the plot, it has been 3 years. But I do remember Huck was a boy who was being cared for by a widow, and his dad was a drunk and he would beat him. Huck somehow escapesfrom his father and meets Jim on an island. He and Jim floated down the Mississippi river and along the way they encounter dangerous people, weathers and Jim gets captures. In 8th grade after reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn we looked through several quotes by Mark Twain and I remember discussing he was against religion and government.
ReplyDeleteLooking through the edmodo home page I found that Mckenzie said that Adventure of Huckleberry Finn was banned. Which was very interesting to learn about. But it is not surprising, since it brings up many edgy topics and Mark Twain's point of view of society might have angered people and the publisher.
ReplyDeleteI have no prior experience with the author Mark Twain, nor have I heard much about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Yet, I do know that Mark Twain is a popular icon throughout the world and has brought great entertainment to many children and adults. I also know that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn occurs near a river for most of the story, and that Huck Finn had run away from home because of his abusive father.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I remember about Tom Sawyer, Huck lives with an old widow who dotes on him, much to his chagrin. I also remember that, because of the treasure he and Tom Sawyer found, he is rich. I am coming here after reading How to Read Literature Like a Professor, so I know that the story involves Huck traveling down the Mississippi with a runaway slave, Jim, who is attempting to find freedom. The problem that arises is that the Mississippi flows south, so he is escaping his owners, but at the same time he is heading farther and farther into slave territory, where he may be treated even worse than he was by his former captors.
ReplyDeleteI have no previous knowledge of Huck Finn. Although, I did start reading before I came on this site and read in the first chapter that he is associated with Tom Sawyer. Although I have never read about Tom Sawyer, I have heard about him and have seen cartoons in which he is a character. I have also read many inspiring quotes by the the author of Huck Finn, Mark Twain. The only other thing that I have heard about Huck Finn is from when I was a 7th grader listening to my 8th grade friends talk about having to read it when I became an 8th grader (even though we never got around to reading it when I was in 8th grade).
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have heard about The adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the book has been a source of great controversy throughout the years. If I am correct it is due to it's use of language and references to Black American slaves. I know the book is somewhat similar to Tom Sawyer, in that it has the same setting and time period. I have also heard that the book was banned for a period of time. The only Mark Twain work that I've read is Tom Sawyer. Personally, I was not as fond of him as my english teacher, but have heard many great things about him from people who know far more about english than I do. Perhaps I will learn more about him upon the reading of Huckleberry Finn.
ReplyDeleteAlong with Kendra, I also remember hearing about Huckleberry Finn from the grade above me, and i always expected that i would get to read it too. But, the next year came along and we never got around to reading it.
ReplyDeleteI saw that mekdes said she recalled discussing Mark Twain and how he was against government and religion. Of the very little that i do know of Mark Twain, this wouldn't surprise me. I take Mark Twain to have been a man that would not have nessacarily been against such things, bu rather, would have encouraged people to think outside the box, and question certain issues in society.
ReplyDeleteAlong with Shelby and Kendra, i remember hearing about it from people in the class above me. I remember being somewhat excited to read it to get the full story, but as previously mentioned, we didn't have enough time in the year to read it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had any experience at all with this novel, and I haven't had much with Mark Twain, either. I had read the Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 6th or 7th grade, but I can't remember much from it. I do, however, remember Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn being best friends. I have also heard some details from the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, so I do know that he finds himself on a raft in the Mississippi river with a runaway slave named Jim. That pretty much covers all of my prior knowledge with this book.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading through these posts, some of them, especially Mekdes's, have rung some bells. I think what I'm remembering are the parts of Huckleberry's past that he had shared with Tom Sawyer, and their experiences together. A couple of their run-ins with Injun Joe came back to memory, too.
ReplyDeleteI truly have no prior experience with Mark Twain. Usually when I think of Mark Twain I associate it him with Tom Sawyer, not Huck Finn. However, I remember hearing that Huckleberry Finn is a very controversial novel and was banned in many different cities. It has also been around for many years and I believe it is a classical novel. My parents have told me a little about it when I first told them i had to read it because they too read it when they were in school. I was excited to be able to read one of Mark Twain's book because he is known as a very accomplished writer.
ReplyDeleteAlong with Kendra I don’t have experience with Huck Finn. I too heard upperclassmen talking about this book when I was younger and never got to read it. I have seen Tom Sawyer in cartoons but never really associated him with Mark Twain or even Huck Finn. I also feel like Shelby’s post and mine are similar in many ways because we both don’t really know about Mark Twain or Huck Finn but know of him and his popularity throughout the world.
